An inclusive archery club set up by an inspiring archer has won Sporting Initiative of the Year at the Birmingham Awards.
The Awards recognise the people and groups who make a contribution to the city and those who live there.
Crescent Archers was started by Jamila Bi after Archery GB successfully bid to Sport England for the National Governing Body (NGB's) Sport Participation, Innovation and Digital fund, which targeted NGBs involved in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games programme.
Jamila was appointed as a part time Legacy Coordinator to help achieve our aspirations and she has proved to be a hugely positive role model for archery and the West Midlands.
Her hard work has resulted in over 6,000 people experiencing archery, in most cases for the first time, across the West Midlands, since she started on 1 July 2022. As well as the club, she delivers the StreetGames HAF Programme (Holiday, Activity and Food) focused on archery delivered across all school holidays in partnership with Bring it On Brum.
Gayle Pink, Head of Participation, said: "I cannot think of anyone better than Jamila to win this award. Jamila is passionate about archery and always goes over and above to welcome and support people to take part and continue their journey in archery. I am so proud of Jamila and it's fantastic for her to get this recognition for all the hard work and dedication she gives on a daily basis."
Jamila said: "It's such an incredible honour to receive the Sporting Initiative of the Year Award! I want to take this moment to thank everyone who supported and believed in me when I shared my vision of creating an inclusive archery club for the community, right here in the heart of Birmingham.
"I have to admit, it wasn't easy—I faced my share of obstacles along the way. That's why this recognition means so much. It has strengthened my determination to continue growing and working towards a more inclusive world through the power of sport, which has a unique way of bringing us all together.
"Thank you to everyone who nominated and voted for us, as well as to my colleagues, friends, and most of all my family, who are my rock and support me through everything. And, of course, thank you to Birmingham Awards, Archery GB, UK Sport and Crescent Archers."
The Birmingham Awards founders, Anita Chumber and Ifraz Ahmed, of B Events, congratulated all participants and winners, sharing their gratitude for everyone who contributes to Birmingham's growth and vibrancy.
Anita Chumber said: "Every year, the Birmingham Awards shine a light on the incredible talent, drive, and passion within our city.
