The 2023 British Field Champions are crowned

At the All British and Open Field Championships at Avalon Archers named its 2023 champions this weekend.

This year's sold-out event was hosted at Avalon Archers' impressive course, put together and organised by John Hartfield. It was a weekend of world-class shooting on a challenging yet rewarding set of targets.

Field archer liaison Vic Williams said: "It's been a fantastic weekend of field archery at the British and Open Championships, and interest in the event this year has been high. It's been a few years since we've run out of spaces so hopefully this is indicative of the growing interest in Archery GB field events."

Within the compound men's unlimited division the battle for first place went all the way to ties on 6s as both Carl Richards and Chris White shot 800 on the nose. Carl took the title with 92 6s to Chris's 89.
 

For the recurve men, ex-GB shooter and 2012 World Field bronze medalist Jon Shales won the championships for the 17th time. The first time he claimed the title was in 1989, when he was just 15 years of age.

Jon said: "Back then I was unbelievably happy and proud to win, it meant everything to me and a real dream come true. I grew up shooting courses like that so nothing was out of my comfort zone plus I was shooting with my old GB team mates so we were just having a nice time out in the woods. I don't have the time to commit to any special training, I just shoot little and often as my busy work schedule allows," he said. 

Vic added: "I have to congratulate the team of judges and work party on their professionalism and dedication to making it all happen this weekend, it ran like clockwork. Thank you!"
