Another year, another successful, fun weekend of archery at the Disability Championships.
On 14-15 September 2024 the UK’s flagship disability event, Disability Championships, took place at Lilleshall National Sports Centre. Over 70 archers from across the country came to compete in 16 inclusive categories.
The Championships brings together archers from all levels of experience, from novices to Paralympians. One of the GB Para squad and winner of the Recurve Open Men, Cameron Radigan, chatted to us about why he comes back to the event year after year.
“It’s just the atmosphere. Getting to see so many people with different disabilities, coming from many different backgrounds to compete at one event, it’s incredible. Watching it grow from just after Covid when I started to having over thirty targets on the field now is amazing.”
Laura Bray from Fakenham Bowmen competed at her very first Disability Championships this year after getting back into the sport two years ago. She’s now looking to take part in the Para National Talent Development Programme, with the aim of one day earning a place on the national Para squad.
Hilda Gibson, from the Worshipful Company of Fletchers, said: “There are a lot more clubs that are accessible, or becoming accessible, and a lot more coaches who are confident to teach and coach people with disabilities. The numbers of archers in disability archery are increasing, with around 1,500 registered with Archery GB. I think it’s flourishing in this country.
“This is what the Fletchers’ Trust is all about. The main focus is helping people with a disability get into archery, stay in archery, and excel at archery. So, seeing more and more people come here is really positive.”
