Youth recurve archers to watch this season

With the National Tour season starting this weekend, here are a few youth recurve archers to watch on the scene!

The National Tour season starts this weekend at Bucks or Bounty, here is a quick round-up of some of the youth recurve archers to watch this season.

Recurve Women

Megan Costall

Megan Costall, 18 years old, has been training hard over winter, taking her first win at the Squad Invitational Day earlier this month. How does Megan feel about the season ahead?

What are you most looking forward to about the 2022 national tour season?

"Unfortunately last year I was forced to miss several of the National Tour competitions due to COVID restrictions. This year I'm mainly looking forward to competing without the barrier. I was able to train outside throughout the winter season thanks to my local community. So, I'm excited to see how the outdoor season goes."

What would it mean to you to make the finals at Wollaton Hall in Nottingham this year?

"Making the finals at Wollaton Hall would be very exciting. It would be amazing to compete at such a beautiful venue."

What are your goals and aspirations for the National Tour season?

"My goal this season is to shoot consistently at all of the stages. Establishing myself as a competitive senior athlete. I also hope to have a medal placing at the National Tour finals in Wollaton."

Which is your favourite stage of the National Tour and why?

"I quite like travelling around to all of the different stages of the National Tour. It's like a little adventure each time I go to compete! I haven't been to the venue at Evesham before, so I'm looking forward to looking around the local area!"

Recurve Men

Cheung Sum Hin Moses

Cheung Sum Hin Moses, 17 years old, is consistently shooting at a high level ahead of the National Tour season. As this is his first National Tour season, let's see what he is looking forward to!

What are you most looking forward to about the 2022 National Tour season?

"I am very excited to join the 2022 National Tour season. This is my first time joining a series of large-scale shooting events. I am also looking forward to making some new friends in the UK."

What are your goals and aspirations for the season?

"I would like to continue developing my mental skills and experience under different weather conditions. This will help me achieve my goal of getting well prepared to compete in international tournaments."

What would it mean to you to make the National Tour finals at Wollaton Hall in Nottingham this year?

"Except for a big recognition of my hard work, it will also be a very amazing experience to compete with top archers."

How do you feel going into the 2022 season?

"I have already participated in several local competitions this season, and I enjoyed them very much. I will play more national games in the near future and continue to make new friends."

Which is your favourite stage of the National Tour and why?

"The stage in Scotland is the most expected one. apart from it being a famously beautiful place, I also can meet some archers on the northern side."

Monty Orton

The last, and by no means least, of the recurve youth archers to watch, is Monty Orton, 18 years old. Monty has been stirring up a storm throughout the indoor season and the start of the outdoor season. What is he looking forward to this season?

What are you most looking forward to about the 2022 National Tour season?

"I think for me, I'm really looking forward to just getting out there and back into competition. Although there were some tournaments last year, they still had limits on numbers and restrictions. So it'll be good to see more ‘normal' competitions and hopefully with a larger number of entries.

What would it mean to you to make the finals at Wollaton Hall in Nottingham this year?

"In the September before lockdown, I won silver in the Key Event final in Caldicot Castle, as a Cadet. Now I'm a Junior, but entering as a Senior in the National Tour. The Gents Recurve is a tough category, so to make it to the National Tour final would be huge, not only for me but also the coaching team around me."

Which is your favourite stage of the National Tour and why?

"That's a tough one, as all of them are good in different ways. If I had to choose between the ones I did last year, it would probably have to be Surrey. It's a lovely ground - and as a bonus last year it was really sunny!"

Any advice for younger archers who are participating in the National Tour for the first time this year?

"Yes - my advice for any younger archers, not only for National Tour - just go out and enjoy the competitions. Don't focus on scores, or worry about other scores. Focus on yourself and your own shot."
