Today, UK Sport announced its decision to provide additional funding to help a number of sports in a final push for Olympic and Paralympic success.
With the women's basketball team set to receive the lion's share of £325,000, archery is one of four other sports that have been gifted a significant sum: £279,243 will be shared between Archery GB (£195,379), British Fencing (£57,264) and Skateboard GB (£26,600) with wheelchair fencing also standing to benefit from a small investment.
After winning World Championship Bronze, the GB women's archery team will benefit from an increased investment of £195,379. The team of Sarah Bettles, Bryony Pitman and Naomi Folkard beat China in a tense recurve Bronze medal match in the Netherlands in June, building on the mixed team's medal success in 2018.
Chelsea Warr, Director of Performance at UK Sport said: Â"The additional investments we are announcing today are all about further maximising Tokyo medal potential following some strong performances in 2019 across a number of our summer sports.
Â"Our additional investments in archery, fencing, wheelchair fencing and skateboarding are great examples of this as we continue to win global medals in an ever wider range of sports.”
Sports Minister Nigel Adams added: Â"As we approach the final straight on the road to Tokyo, we are underlining our support for the Great Britain Women's Basketball team, alongside archery, fencing, skateboarding and wheelchair fencing.
Â"These are sports that have demonstrated their clear potential to qualify and compete at the highest level in 2019 but also their positive social impact in local communities.”
This new financial boost is an indication of UK Sport's continued confidence in the talents and abilities of our archery squads. In preparation for the Tokyo Games, the Paralympic archery team will be flying out to train in Dubai in January, while the Olympic archery squad will head to Turkey in February to acclimatise to the high temperatures that the athletes will face.
David Tillotson, Director of Sport at Archery GB, commented: Â"The funding will support the women's team in their Olympic preparation, along with the men's team, GB has qualified full representation at Tokyo. One of only four nations and the only European nation to do so.
"The women's team backed up their performances at the World Championships with gold in Minsk at the European Games and Naomi Folkard joined Patrick Huston to win mixed team silver.
"The progress of both squads over the last three years strengthens our ambition for medals in Tokyo."
