Classifier opportunities with Archery GB

To expand opportunities for athletes with physical impairments, Archery GB, in collaboration with World Archery Europe and UK Sport, will host a National Classifier Training Course from 20–23 March 2025 at Lilleshall National Sports Centre.

What is classification?

Classification in all para sport is based on the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) definition of disability and decisions relating to the types of disability allowed in sport.

Classification plays a crucial role in para-archery by grouping athletes based on how their impairments affect performance, ensuring fair competition and equal opportunities. This process relies on medical and technical expertise, with classifiers at the heart of the system. They assess athletes using internationally recognised standards to determine eligibility and assign appropriate classifications, supporting fairness and inclusivity in the sport.

World Archery (WA) have applied the IPC principles to create the international classification framework. The UK classifications, completed by AGB classifiers, are based as closely as possible on the WA framework with the aim that any GB archer who progresses to international classification should be allocated to the same sport class as their national classification.

What does the course cover?

The course offers professionals the chance to gain WA certification, valid for four years, equipping them to play an essential role in the archery classification process.

AGB are looking to recruit a team of new classifiers based across the UK to improve accessibility and coverage. Attending the National Classifier Training Course is a requirement in becoming a Classifier. Once qualified, classifiers will be expected to commit to at least two days annually to support competitions and the classification of archers and will receive an allowance and expenses.

Classifiers must have a background in medicine, physiotherapy, or a related field, with experience in assessing physical impairments and familiarity with archery.

If you are interested in applying to become a Classifier, please complete this Expression of Interest Form by 5 February:
