So close at European 3D Championships

Epic battles were the order of the day as British archers strove to secure semi-final places at the 2018 European 3D Championships in Gothenburg.

Amelia Thomas defeated Adele McPeake 52-33 in pool B of the women's barebow category, then went on to beat Spaniards Raquel Frias Cabeza 56-41 and Rosa Minyano Miquel 53-49, as well as Austrian Bettina Altenberger 53-50. She faced Christine Gauthe in the AB pools shoot-off - but it was so nearly fellow Briton Joanne Walker.

Joanne, shooting in pool A, saw off Stine Kjaer-Anderson of Denmark 41-39, Russia's Maria Savenkova 50-43 and Sweden's Julia Hed in a shoot-off. That left her facing Gauthe. Joanne scored 38 but it was no match for her opponent's 51. It was a similar story in the AB pools match. Amelia scored 47 but the on-form Frenchwoman shot 56 to go through to the semis.

Jason Meehan came so close to making it to the barebow men's semis. He beat fellow Briton Mathew Thomas - who had earlier defeated Austrian Oscar Richter - in a tough match and Finland's Juha Rosendahl 57-51 before coming up against Martin Ottosson. Jason shot 44 but the Swede went through to the pools decider with 56 points.

In the compound competition, Hope Greenwood defeated Russia's Varvara Darkhanova 58-46 and Swede Lisa Sodersten in a shoot-off before falling victim to Denmark's Sisse Gram. Gary Cole beat Sweden's Rickard Johansson 64-63 before losing 57-60 to Janos Szedlar of Hungary.

In the instinctive categories, Michaela Lake lost out to Patricia Irago OConnor of Spain. Lesley Sleight fell to Austrian Erika Sieberer and a one-point victory by France's Emmanuel Chevrier ended Jed Cullen's hopes. Longbow archer Emily Williams was beaten 33-26 by Estonian Ylle Kell.
