Great Britain win nine medals and retain an eight yearlong title.
The 2024 European Youth Championships took place in Ploie?ti, Romania from 6-13 July. Great Britain had a brilliant week, returning to home soil with nine medals to their name.
GB have held the title for the under 18 compound women since 2016: Lucy Mason (2016), Layla Annison (2018), Hallie Boulton (2022). And now, Chloe Scott has added her name to the list. She faced Sweden’s Jennifer Winsenne in the live gold final. The two competitors were tied on 113 apiece going into the last end, but a 28 from Chloe was enough to take the win with one point to spare, 141-140.
Chloe said: “I feel really proud of myself. I didn’t really think I was going to be able to do it. I don’t really have that much confidence in myself, but this has definitely got my confidence up again and I know that I’m able to do anything.”
Compound Pathway Lead Coach, Stuart Taylor, said: "I’m very proud of our compound athletes. They have all put in a great effort preparing for this event and have backed that up this week with resilience and hard work. Coming away with eight medals for the group is a fantastic result and testament to their efforts.”
For the recurves, Archie Bromely was their sole individual medallist taking the under 18 men’s title. His gold final was a fight the whole way through, after managing to come back from 5-1 down and taking the match to a shoot-off. Both Archie and his opponent, Arda Ege Donmezguc from Türkiye, shot a ten. However, at the target, the judge called Donmezguc’s arrow closest to the centre when the win was clearly in Archie’s favour. Thankfully, Duncan Busby, acting as the GB agent for the match, insisted the judge re-measure the arrow and Archie was then indicated as the winner.
Archie told us: “I had three matches before this where two of them where shoot-offs and one where I was 4-nil down, so I had a lot of good words from Dave [Morris] keeping me positive. But it’s not over until it’s over. I was so nervous during the shoot-off call, I didn’t have a clue. I was hoping that it was me, but at the end of the day it was a good shoot-off. I was buzzing when I found out that it was me.”
Team Manager, Cait Leach, said: "The whole team in Ploiesti demonstrated great resilience throughout the week in some very challenging conditions. As well as temperatures soaring above 40 degrees, we also experienced storms and a whirlwind which took out several bosses! There were exceptional performances on the field and particular congratulations go to the many GB medallists. No small thanks too to the hard-working staff team who supported athletes on and off the field."
