Learning archery with donkeys

Archery GB is thrilled to announce a unique partnership with Learning in Harmony with Donkeys, an organisation that utilises equine-assisted learning to support individuals in developing life skills, improving their mental health and wellbeing, and supporting health benefits such as strength, cardio, coordination and balance, and socialising.

Based on the idea that donkeys and horses can teach people about themselves, the inclusive programme will see the integration of archery into Learning in Harmony with Donkeys, offering participants a novel and engaging way to enhance their physical and mental health.

The program will introduce participants to the fundamentals of archery in a safe and supportive environment, gradually incorporating the presence of donkeys into the activities. This unique approach will allow people to interact with the animals, fostering a sense of connection and companionship while developing archery skills.

The initial phase of the program will focus on working with a group of adults with learning disabilities, providing them with the opportunity to experience the benefits of this innovative approach firsthand.

What will the archery programme offer?

  • Participants will take part in a fun, practical and gentle approach available to children and adults through shared experiences with our family of donkeys
  • Improves confidence, self-esteem, and builds resilience
  • Supports positive wellbeing
  • Promotes fresh air and exercise whilst promoting health and equality for all
  • Reduction in stress and anxiety
  • Each programme will be tailored to facilitate individual needs in a safe and calming environment

"With the support and guidance from the team at Archery GB and a bit of creative thinking and planning, we will put together a programme that will start the archery and donkey journey. I think this may be the first of its kind!" said Anne Brown Saintfield, from Learning in Harmony with Donkeys. "We are grateful to Lisa [Wheeler, NI Regional Development Officer] and Marty [McCullough, Performance Coach for the NI Academy] for their support and their vision in how the concept of archery and donkeys could be developed further.

"I know the donkeys will be keen to collect the arrows because they will have a lovely big, round bale of straw to have a munch on as the bales will be used for the target practice."

Archery GB are delighted to be working with Learning in Harmony with Donkeys on this innovative project. Combining the therapeutic benefits of archery with the unique qualities of equine-assisted learning creates a truly special opportunity for individuals to develop valuable skills, build confidence, and improve their overall quality of life. This partnership with Learning in Harmony with Donkeys represents a significant step forward in expanding the reach and impact of our sport.
