SportsAid has today (9 April) released a special film dedicated to the parents and guardians of the nation's sportspeople. It features many well-known faces giving thanks to the special people who raised them.
Being the parent or guardian of a talented young athlete can be challenging. These unsung heroes are often the taxi driver, personal assistant, sports psychologist, and lead nutritionist of the child in their care, and that's under normal circumstances. Under the Covid-19 lockdown, they are probably also school teacher, training partner, and social media assistant. And their back garden or garage has probably become a gym! They really are the ‘team behind the team' as they take on many different roles.
The SportsAid footage was gathered in February (prior to government advice about Covid-19) during an engagement with HRH The Duchess of Cambridge, and features SportsAid alumni, including Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill, as well as several currently supported athletes, as they thank their families for their support and guidance over the years.
During the lockdown, we are all facing our own unique challenges. Yet, for the parents and guardians of talented young athletes, there will always be a common thread that brings them together: the love of the sporting journey and the value it brings to their family's lives.
SportsAid hope the stories captured here really show the emotion involved in the sporting journey, and help to convey the pivotal role families play in supporting their child to pursue their ambitions.
