The new member of the British cadet team finished his gold medal match with a perfect set
Jacob Reid, of Telford Archers, took the recurve cadet men's gold medal at Archery GB's 2017 Youth Festival held at Lilleshall National Sports Centre on 26 August, one month after making his international debut at the European Youth Cup in Porec, Croatia in July.
Â"I started the match off a bit slow, but got right into it in on the last end,” said Reid, who beat Thomas Nairn with a perfect-30 fifth set in the final. Â"This week has taught me to be strong on the front. There have been times when I was a bit weak and paid for it with bad arrows.”Â
Reid seeded third over the 72-arrow 60-metre ranking round, beat Will Maddison and Riley Spencer-Nice in straight sets, 6-0, and then Cameron Donaldson and Louis Perkins, both 6-2, in the eliminations.
Finalists Nairn and Reid traded sets in the archery arena set out on Lilleshall's Orangery, neither claiming a strong advantage, and found themselves tied after four.
Reid opened the fifth and last set with an X10 to Nairn's nine and never let off. A perfect 10-10-10, 30 points from three arrows, to finish sealed the last set, 30-28, and secured the gold medal.
While posing for a photo with bows and the of end the match, Reid couldn't stop smiling.
In third place for the recurve cadet men, Alex Wise. The recurve cadet women saw Alyssia Tromans-Ansell close with a perfect 30 after drawing one set to win against Louisa Piper. Ruby Paul won bronze after a tight affair with Thea Rogers.
