This year’s winners of the National Flight Champions are named.
The event has been going strong for 76 years, and back in 1948 the furthest distances shot were 365 years for the gentlemen and 240 yards for the ladies. This year’s event was held on Sunday 25 August at Elvington Airfield, York, where 47 archers came to compete for a blustery day of competing. A total of 20 different classes across 8 bow types were shot.
The furthest distance recorded this year for the men was 778 yards earned by Daeron Meredith from the Bowmen of Bruntwood, and the women’s furthest distance was 540 yards shot by Stef Probert of Beacon Archers.
Tournament Organiser, Tony Bakes, said: “I feel the event was a great success, many archers commenting on how much they enjoyed the day and were now well and truly hooked on Flight. I have long thought that all archers need to experience at least one flight shoot, if only to find out what their bows are capable of. From Cumbria to South Wales, we currently have 4 flight shoots in the UK, and they are a great opportunity to get experience of this little known branch of our sport.
On a personal level, I would like to thank all those who made the trip to Elvington to enter the event. It really is gratifying to see so many turning up, and to listen to the banter up and down the line. It is really a unique experience.”
