GB have two new World 3D Champions

The GB team have returned with three medals from the 2024 World 3D Championships in Slovenia.

In Mokrice, Slovenia for the World 3D Championships, Great Britain took away one silver and two gold medals, as well as finishing third in the overall medal table. Our traditional and longbow athletes are making a name for themselves in 3D archery.

At the 2022 championships, Jed Cullen took the traditional men’s silver medal, and he was able to upgrade it this week for the gold. In the final, he faced the top ranked Czech archer, Tomas Roznovsky. Jed hit the ground running, taking an early lead against his opponent, shooting 22 versus 13 points in the first end. Roznovsky kept fighting, closing the gap between the two men to only four points difference, but it wasn’t enough to catch up to Jed. The Brit won his first World 3D Championships title.

Jed and mixed team partner, Sarah Monteith, shot their way to the gold final against the first ranked team from Austria. Seventh ranked GB fought through four ends, just missing out on the gold medal. With 129 points to the Austrian’s 140, Jed and Sarah took home the silver.

Sarah said: “I am really pleased to have won a silver medal at the World Championships and to have contested the gold medal too! This is the first World level medal I have won, and it feels good to have achieved it at such a high-level tournament.

“We worked well as a team and helped each other to stay calm throughout the match, just focusing hard on the targets and the task in hand, rather than on the crowd and cameras. I feel I shot well in the medal match and was proud to represent Great Britain and take home a medal.”

The second individual medal winner was longbow man, Ian Edwards. At World Archery events, the longbow category combines longbows as well as flatbows, bringing together over 60 archers to compete in this discipline across the men’s and the women’s. After ranking in second place, the highest qualified archer from GB at this event, Ian shot his way through to the gold final. He competed against Marco Pontremolesi from Italy in a very close match. The two men were tied on 61 points apiece going into the final end, but a 20 from Ian to finish was enough to beat the Italian’s 16 to take the title.

Ian told us: “The medal symbolises my belief that 'through the focus of your mind, you can carve out your own destiny'. I felt unstoppable. Fear had no place at that time. I was shooting for the love of my family.”
