Tokyo 2020's archery competition continued today with the first round of the Women's Individual Compound Open.
There was some welcome cloud cover in the morning but the temperature stayed high at around 31C with gusty winds.
On Friday Games debutante Phoebe Paterson Pine ranked 16th and achieved a personal best. She faced Tatiana Andrievskaia, from RPC, in the first round in Yumenoshima Park.
She won 142-138 in a confident first outing in the arena which saw her achieve a perfect score of 30 in the 3rd end. Paterson Pine started well with two 10s and a 9 which was 2mm off a 10. After winning the first end it was a draw in the second before a win in the third saw her take a 7-point lead. It was a draw in the 4th but Andrievskaia won the 5th bringing her performance back with a perfect score. It was too late though as Paterson Pine had done enough to take the match.
She will now face fellow Brit and World no.1 Jess Stretton in the next round tomorrow.
Phoebe Paterson Pine said: Â"Going into the match I was incredibly nervous. This is my first Paralympic Games so entering it I just wanted to stick to my process, stick to my shot, do everything I do normally and I think I did that to an absolute tee.”
On now having to face her teammate Jess Stretton in the next round: Â"It's difficult knowing that I have to go against a teammate, we absolutely adore each other. As a team we're very close knit. We train together four days a week, we compete together so going against her is going to be difficult. We're so equally matched it could go either way, I wish her the best of luck and I know she wishes me the best of luck."
In the evening Jess Stretton and Nathan Macqueen will take to the field for the Mixed Team Compound Open quarterfinal against Iran.
The pair are seeded 5th while Iran rank 4th going into the competition.
