Calling all GB Olympians! The GB Olympians' Association (GBOA) is looking for a volunteer representative from each Summer and Winter Olympic sport to take on an ambassador role in helping to open up communications to all GB Olympians, past and present.
If you're an Olympian, you could play a vital role in helping to unite all GB Olympians as a volunteer communications representative for the GB Olympians' Association (GBOA).
GBOA is a mainly networking body to which every member of Team GB who has ever ‘taken to the field of play' at a Summer or Winter Olympic Games is automatically enrolled. There are around 3,000 members (alumni and current Olympians) at any time, ranging from some who competed in Games as far back as London 1948, right through to those who competed in the PyeongChang Winter Games of 2018. Of course, some existing Olympians had also already been selected for Tokyo 2020 when the postponement was announced and we eagerly anticipate celebrating with them as well as with the new intake of Olympians when the Games finally take place in 2021.
GBOA is run by a committee of voluntary Directors and is supported by both the World Olympians Association and the British Olympic Association. Since London 2012, the organisation has grown from strength to strength, managing two membership surveys, establishing Facebook, LinkedIn and website presences and developing a strategy that celebrates Olympism and seeks to promote all that our Olympians can offer, while competing and critically also in their lives beyond sport.
Examples of member activities include regular reunions, such as the 2018 reunion in London to celebrate the 50-year anniversary of Mexico 1968. There's also an annual day out and reunion in Hyde Park, when members across all sports come together to participate in the Olympians race as part of London Marathon's Westminster Mile series.
The role
The GB Olympians committee is now seeking a representative from each Summer and Winter Olympic sport to take on an ambassador role in helping to open up communications to all GB Olympians.
The role of a GB Olympians Ambassador is to act as a two-way conduit. He/she would assist with spreading messages (for example, around a particular reunion or event) from the Committee to all GB Olympians - past and present - within their own sport. They would also provide a central point of contact for Olympians within that sport. There would normally be no requirement for ambassadors to attend meetings.
Volunteers need no particular qualifications other than being an Olympian (aged between 18 and 100!) and having good access to email.
