Three of the GB archers finished qualification in the top eight at the World Championships in Berlin
Great Britain shone through the windy and rainy conditions on the World Championship grounds set beside Berlin’s Olympic stadium.
The recurve morning qualification saw world number one Penny Healey walk away with a 5th place position with a 664. Teammate and world number two Bryony Pitman shot a 657 to make it to joint 8th. In the shoot-off to decide who took 8th place, Bryony’s 9 was closer to the centre than Denmark’s Danstrup Andersen’s 9, earning her 8th.
Penny said: “I’m happy with how I finished. I did a few shots that I have to improve on, but it was a good outcome and I'm looking forward for the rest of the week.”
Penny and Bryony were joined by Louisa Piper for the team round which they ranked in 9th place for qualification. They will face Malaysia’s 24th ranked women’s team. Penny and recurve man James Woodgate ranked in 10th place for the mixed team and they will shoot in 1/12th round against Canada.
Following the compound afternoon qualification, Izzy Carpenter shot a 692 to finish in joint 8th place. Like Bryony, she also had to do a shoot-off, which put her against America’s Alexis Ruis. An X from Izzy beat Alexis’s 10 to put her in 8th position. Only one point behind Izzy, world number one Ella Gibson ranked in 12thwith a 691.
Izzy said: “I am just going to focus on my shot process. It has got me this far and I am really comfortable with how it's going. I will just take it one arrow at a time.”
As a team, compound women Izzy Carpenter, Ella Gibson and Layla Annison ranked in 5th place. They will have a bye in the 1/12 and their first match in the eliminations will be against the team from Poland. Compound man Adam Carpenter finished with a 692 like his sister Izzy, ranking the sibling duo in 12th place after qualification. They will face the 21st ranked team from Croatia in the 1/12 round, making this the first time they’ve shot as a mixed team internationally since 2016.
The morning of Wednesday 2nd will cover the men’s and women’s recurve team elimination, over lunchtime will be the recurve and compound mixed team eliminations, and the afternoon will showcase the compound team eliminations for both the men and the women. Follow the scores here.
