National Tour 2024: Surrey

Ella Gibson smashes her own world record at the third stage of the 2024 National Tour at Surrey.

Surrey Archery Weekend hosted the most recent instalment of the National Tour at Woking Archery Club’s venue from 13-14 July. The stage saw champions crowned, records broken, and world class shooting.

Compound

The highlight of the weekend was Ella Gibson breaking her own WA 50m world record by three points with an astonishing score of 718 44X! After the first half of qualification Ella had only dropped two points with a 358, and a perfect 360 in the following round saw her beat the record she set herself in 2023 at the European Games in Krakow. This score rivals that of the men’s record set by USA’s Braden Gellenthien in 2016; both scoring 718 points.

Ella said: “Honestly it feels amazing to do it. Of course I always want to break records and break world records. I shot a 715 last year and I broke the world record by two then. I was planning on breaking it by two again, so three was a little bit more than I expected, but I wasn’t expecting it to go this weekend. Absolutely not.”

In the compound women’s gold final, Ella shot against third ranked archer Izzy Carpenter. The two were tied going into the final end and Izzy took the win with a 30 to Ella’s 29. For the men, Croatian archer Domagoj Buden defeated Kai Thomas-Prause for the top spot on the podium with a near perfect 149 to Kai’s 148.

Recurve

The men’s recurve podium was completed with the Olympic team trio: Alex Wise, Conor Hall and Tom Hall. Alex and Conor shot for gold in a tight match, which Alex won with a 6-4 victory. On the women’s side, the UK Masters final was replicated with Bryony Pitman and Penny Healey facing off together once again. This time it was Bryony who earned her spot on top of the podium, winning 6-4 over her teammate.

Barebow

Sarah Hubbard made this her second National Tour stage win in a row, defeating Anastasia Wilson with a perfect 6-0 win. In the men’s gold final, ninth ranked Robert Edwards had his first stage win by beating third ranked Thomas Williams 6-4.
